The Formby method

December 17th – We often here, at home in Cornwall, talk about the power behind the throne. Well, like a northern English version of Mr & Mrs Macbeth, Mr & Mrs George Formby were the quintessential couple when it came to business and how to run it. Whilst the lovable, cheeky Wigan wag strummed his ukulele and sang about cleaning windows and leaning on lampposts and assuring everyone it would turn out nice again, his wife, Beryl was ensuring they never had to worry about money, not ever. It was her business acumen and tough character that got Mr. Formby £35,000 per film; this was not in Hollywood, this was in Elstree…in 1932… Can I get one of those, please?
