Bonzo Dog V Spike Jones

December 14th – Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band opted for comedy rather than straight music in order to get on in the biz. However, one only has to listen to the level of ability they show on their various albums to realise they could have made in just about any genre.
Gorilla is a standout album for me. There’s not a wasted track and gems such as Jazz – Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold and Intro-Outro never cease to amaze and amuse with their perspicacity idiosyncrasy.
YouTube – Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band Jazz Delicious will bring it up.
What I would like to put a bet on is that one or more members of the band were influenced by the output of Spike Jones (born this day in 1811) whose zany performances belied a talented and highly professional group of musicians, any of whom could be in a pick-up backing anyone in the biz. He and his band made albums, singles, films, TV, Ads…you name it, if it had music in it he was there or thereabouts.
YouTube – Spike Jones Cocktails for Two then click on the 3rd box down (DonMcGlynnFilms) This will introduce newcomers to a musical equivalent of The Marx Brothers.
