September 18th – On this day in 1970, Jimi Hendrix died… Well,
not a lot else to say after that really. Sad old end to a real giant in the
rock world and now, of course, both Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, drums and
bass respectively in the Jimi Hendrix
Experience, are also long gone. Reading their various autobiographies it
becomes clear there were a lot of management issues (where the money went and
to whom) and a reshuffling of the band contribution attribution during the
latter stages of the Experience’s lifetime. All three got involved in various
other projects post split (Fat Mattress,
Band of Gypsies, etc) but I have to say, Machine Gun, recorded live with Mr. Hendrix (Billy Cox and Buddy
Miles notwithstanding) the original trio were just something else entirely; no
one to touch them; not Cream, not Led Zeppelin, not even Rory Gallagher in
all his incarnations from Taste
onwards…no a one.
There we are, all gone (sighs) will play a track or two off’f Axis Bold as Love today by way of a
reminder as to what we once had…oh, and this one too… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNEuQdFC-_Y
